The hemp hurd is the woody, inner core of the hemp stalk. Hemp hurds are lightweight, insulating, anti-microbial and bond excellently with a lime-based hempcrete binder to make breathable, sustainable walls, floors, ceiling insulation, hemp blocks and more.
Hemp hurd is also a clean, soft and absorbent animal bedding for your horses, chickens or pets.
Hemp and Block only uses 100% American hemp hurd that can be rated as “Building-Grade.” That requires proper grading, separating, cleaning, with controls for minimal dust and bast fibers. Sizing is primarily 1/2″ length with a variety of 1/4″ – 1″ pieces.

Bagged Hemp Hurd for Hempcrete
Hemp hurd is the primary component of hempcrete (hemp-lime insulation). Packaging the hurd into compressed, 33 lb. bags makes for easier and quicker batching of hempcrete.
Fresh hempcrete mix made with hemp hurd, hempcrete binder and water.Test fresh hempcrete by packing the mix into a ball. It should stick together well, able to be gently tossed into the air.
Hemp Hurd for Premium Animal Bedding
The high-quality hemp we use as building-grade is also a premium animal bedding material for livestock, especially horses, which require very clean bedding. Our hemp is free of mold, excess dust, dirt or adulterants. It’s properly graded and doesn’t contain excess clumps of thin bast fiber. And the hemp must come from good stock to make chunky, fluffy hurd instead of stringy or pencil-y bits that are too thin for the application.
